Where to eat in the main area of Brasov

It’s not often that you find great food in the main area of a city. Or at least it takes some time finding out where they hide all the good places. Since I’ve stayed in Brasov many times, I made a list of great restaurants serving amazing food, while located in the main area of Brasov.

Brasov’s Republicii street is one of the most visited streets of the entire city when it comes dining or having drinks on one of the many sunny terraces. But which restaurant should you pick for a bite? I chose the best restaurants of Republicii street and beyond. Because within the fortress of this medieval city, there’s a lot to choose from.

One thing you should keep in mind while visiting Romania, is the lack of vegetarian food. I’ve found some here and there, but it’s usually a bit disappointing in taste and variety. Be prepared to pack a lot of meat. If that’s okay with you, read on!

Deane’s Irish pub and grill

It’s not a secret Deane’s is my favorite place in all of Brasov. Okay, it’s not Romanian food they are serving, but Irish (and Italian for some reason). However they do it well. This Irish pub has a very friendly staff, tasty dishes and, as you know, great cocktails. Every Tuesday Deane’s serves ‘Pizza Marti’ or pizza Tuesday. Be quick, as it is very popular! Deane’s is also your best guess when you want a drink a bit later in the evening. The place is usually packed, but the staff will find you a table if needed.

Suggestions: The Deane’s best burger is to die for and so is the Guinness pie. And if you don’t have a lot of room for food while enjoying your drink, try their bruschetta or chocolate cake. YUM!

Gaura Dulce

A restaurant that does serve Romanian food! The place looks a bit expensive on the outside but nothing’s further from the truth. If you enjoy dining in a great atmosphere for reasonable prices, you should give this restaurant a go. They also have a large terrace outside for those warm summer days.

Suggestions: Goulash with cabbage or grilled beef skewers with potatoes and a green salad. Delicious!

Convives Gastro Pub

This restaurant is somewhat pricey compared to the other restaurants I’ve mentioned. The food, however, is great and so is the staff. I haven’t been inside of this restaurant as we ate on the terrace. In summer that’s the way to go anyway.

Suggestions: The mixed grill gives you an idea of what Romanian people eat from the barbeque. Their steak is amazing and the Romanian sausage rolls have that typical flavor one expects when dining in Romania.

The Hockey Pub

I was beyond amazed with the staff of the Hockey Pub! Super friendly people serving great, affordable food! When I first came to Brasov, I was surprised by the fact there is a hockey pub. Don’t be afraid because of the name though. At this pub – famous for their hamburgers – you can eat on a beautiful patio. I haven’t been inside yet, because of the great weather, but according to the photos it must be a blast. Must try out when in Brasov!

Suggestions: The hamburger is great, the bruschetta is amazing!

Technically Ando’s is located just outside the old fortress walls and so it’s not a ‘restaurant’ in the main area. Hell, it’s not even really a restaurant but a fast food chain. Doesn’t matter. Ando’s sandwiches are the ones you will dream about once you’ve returned home. Oh, and it’s oh so cheap!

Suggestions: The chicken schnitzel sandwich is definitely my favorite. Don’t be a baby and order at least a large one.

La Bucatarul Vesel

Every time I walked through Strada Michael Weiss this restaurant was filled with locals. You know how that works, right? Indeed, where the locals go, you go. Luckily I managed to get myself a spot on their sunny terrace. I loved how cosy everything looked, with the flowers all around me. This place has a super friendly staff, fair prices and lovely Romanian food.

Suggestions: I loved their chicken schnitzel parmesan. It looks a bit disgusting on your plate but it’s oh so delicious!

Festival 39

A typical place I wouldn’t sit in the first place, because it’s at the beginning of Brasov’s huge main street. A big mistake, so I found out, as they serve scrumptious, meaty goulash soup – the best one I’ve had so far in this country. The staff is friendly and from the terrace it’s nice to watch people walk up and down the street.

Suggestions: Goulash soup! Their steak with green pepper sauce is great too!

These were my favorite restaurants while spending my summer in Brasov! If YOU by any chance end up in this lovely city, try out some of the delicious food they serve! I do recommend Gott’s, it’s near Gaura Dulce and they have by far the best fish dishes you can find in Brașov.
