Autumn is a magical season! Even more so when you can spend it in a heavily forested area, like Romania. Autumn in Romania is when an already stunning country transforms into something so beautiful, you’d have to pinch yourself to make sure you’re awake. I had the opportunity to explore Romania in autumn and today I’m sharing my favorite photos with you.
Rural Transylvania is the ideal spot for breathing in some fresh mountain air and watching the leaves fall. On my road trip through Transylvania I tried to soak up as many autumn colors as I could. Having spent time in Romania before, I already knew how much this country has to offer. In summer I stayed in Bucharest for a month, from where I made little side trips to Brasov, Sinaia and other must-see places. Now it was time for the real deal.
We drove from beautiful Brasov towards the unknown, ending up in peaceful parks and mystique little villages. I had only a week to get from Bucharest – where we witnessed the craziest soccer match of all time – to Brasov, take a loop through Transylvania – all the way to Cluj-Napoca – and head back to the capital. However, you can read more about that in my article about roadtripping Transylvania.
Tourism to Romania has been steadily increasing, however there are still too many travelers who think it’s dangerous or just not that interesting. Hopefully these photo’s will make you think otherwise.
Why you should spend autumn in Romania
Don’t be surprised to see people traveling by horse and carriage while playing with the Iphone 7.
The scenery is so incredibly beautiful you’ll start snapping photos from the car.
Borsec is probably best to visit in autumn. The place is known for its delicious spring water. I didn’t know it was also such a wonderful spot for hiking and exploring. With magnificent views all around and a bear cave to wander around in, I had the time of my life visiting this amazing destination!
The Lake of St. Anne (or Sfanta Ana) was breathtaking this time of year! The best thing about our visit, except from the fall foliage, was that there was no-one around to disturb the peace and quiet.
Brasov is already my favorite place in Romania. I have been here so many times that I consider it my second home! In summer, I escaped to Brasov quite often as it has the crispest air. In autumn, this place is beyond gorgeous!
Here the road condition is fine, it’s the curves you gotta watch!
Don’t get distracted by the view, too.
The bench makes it seem like everyone’s just waiting for autumn.
The historic town of Sighisoara is a must visit! Especially in fall when there are no tourists around at all.
Probably the best thing about arriving in the dark: the view is always a great surprise. This one is priceless.
And so is this one.
What we came to see 🙂

June 18, 2019 at 19:38Beautiful photos! It has been a couple of years, but do you recall when exactly you visited Romania? I will be there for a few days at the end of October and into November and am a little nervous that the foliage will be gone and the weather too dreary. Thank you!

July 3, 2019 at 12:33Hi Alexandra! Thanks so much! There’s nothing I can say to take your worries away. Fall foliage really depends on the weather during that period. We were there mid-October and there was plenty but since every year is slightly different, you’d have to go and see for yourself. I’m sure you will have a great time anyway! 🙂
